Who invented leggings?

Surprisingly, the history of leggings stems as far back as the 14 century when they were a part of casual and military dress for men. It wasn't until the 1950s that leggings crossed over to women's fashion when Audrey Hepburn wore slim-fit capri pants that widely differed from the popular wide-legged styles at the time. Over the next few decades, more and more celebrities began to wear stretchy pants after the invention of Lycra (spandex). During the 70s and 80s the wet look and leather appearance leggings were quite the rage due to Olivia Newton John in Grease and Madonna's typical stage-wear. During this time, leggings even began to pop up on the runway. During the 1990s, international supermodel Cindy Crawford made leggings famous during her photoshoots, which transferred over to current times where celebrities like the Olsen twins, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Kendall Jenner, and Rihanna have all been spotted wearing leggings as a part of everyday outfits.
