What is melange fabric?
Melange stems from the French term for "medley" and means a fabric that was made using multiple colors of fabric. This can be done through stitching them together or individually dying each fabric. Typically this means black and white to result in grey, but it can also be brighter colors. If the melange material was created through dying, this type of fabric is processed by dipping it into multiple dye baths so that each fabric only absorbs specific dye colors. Sometimes melange is also referred to as heather or cross-dyed fabric.
What does ribbed knitting mean?
Ribbing is a type of stitching or knitting that involves vertical stripes of stockinette stitch (basic stitch) that alternative with vertical stripes of reverse stockinette stitch. There can also be other types of stitches woven in such as purl stitches, leaving ribbing with the edges that give it the bumpy texture. This type of stitching is used for thicker fabrics that need to keep form such as cuffs and sweater hems, but also legwear. The tightness of the stitching can also influence the item's flexibility.
