What is the best sock material for winter?

The experts say hands down: wool. When a material like cotton gets wet, it loses all insulating properties, so it is basically like wearing nothing at all. Furthermore, you still have warm boots, your feet will sweat, leaving you with cold, wet feet. The best solution is to stick with cool. First, wool is a much better insulator than cotton. It also absorbs a high amount of moisture, up to a third of it's weight actually before it starts to feel wet, ideal for those who sweat a lot. But even when wet, wool is still insulating. Wool also dries faster than cotton or other synthetic materials. And just to top things off, wool fibers come naturally with anti-bacterial properties, helping to stave off any stinky feet odor. Thus wool can actually be worn a few times before washing is truly mandatory.
