| The Denier information indicates the weight of the yarn. Denier shows the weight of the used yarn in grammes on 9000 m. For example: 9000 m from a 20 Denier pantyhose weighs 20 grammes.
Already since the beginning of to seventies of the twentieth century DEN supposed to be replaced by DTEX. DTEX is the metric information and idicates the weight of the yarn referring to 10.000 m. But until today the new designation could not enforce itself, at least not in connection with tights.
Beside the outdated Gauge Denier offers the most usual orientation in order to estimate the refinement and opacity of a pantyhose. Until about 20 DEN a pantyhose is called transparent, until about 40 DEN it is called semi-transparent or semi-opaque and from 40 DEN a pantyhose is considered opaque.
By the way Denier originally identifies old French coins, which goes back to the beginning of the Franconia empire. |
